The Amedro Christening set
I knit the Shelagh Christening dress and shawl from Gladys Amedro's
book, Shetland Lace, in 2000, substituting various patterns from
Hazel Carter's "Shetland Lace Knitting from Charts". It was
knit for my granddaughter Kirsty Miles, who was born in that year;
and it belongs to her. I hope she might wear the shawl one day at her
wedding. The outfit has appeared at the subsequent christenings of
various cousins.

In the centre, I have knit my initials, "Nov 6" -- the baby's birthday, her initials -- KLWM, and "2000". Beneath "2000" you can see a lacey rendition of the Calcutta Cup. This is a rugby football trophy which England and Scotland have competed for annually since the days when the match was played between two teams of British civil servants in India. Scotland almost never win, but they did, most unexpectedly, in 2000. England regained the cup in March, 2001, (thus, after the Christening), and kept it until Ought Six..
I used a wool and silk yarn from the Knitters' Underground This stuff is wonderful: as fine as Shetland "cobweb" yarn, perhaps finer, but it's plyed, and therefore is much stronger and easier to knit with than the Shetland yarn. And the "old lace" color makes the result look like an heirloom before you're even finished. But I'm not sure it's available any more. Today, I'd look at Heirloom Knitting yarns.
