Jenny's Shawl
This is the shawl I knit for my friend Jenny, to celebrate her wedding in August, 2003.
The yarn is Helen's Lace, colourway "Gold Hill", in the Lorna's Laces range. The shawl took slightly more than one skein. It is the first time I have ever finished an entire skein of Helen's Lace. I might add that Lorna Miser herself was here in Edinburgh in the summer of 2003 -- and she told me that SHE has never finished a whole skein.
The edging is "Rippled Diamond Edging", page 75 of Sharon Miller's book, Heirloom Lace.
The border is meant to represent alternate thistles and roses. I devised it for my grandson Fergus Drake . It seemed equally appropriate here, since Jenny is a Scotswoman and her husband an Englishman.
Next comes "Ladders and Drops Chevron" , page 39 of Hazel Carter's book, "Shetland Lace Knitting from Charts".
And finally the initials of bride and bridegroom, and the date of the wedding, using Bridget Rorem's lacy alphabet from Piecework, May/June 1998.
I have written some notes
about the design of this and my other Shetland shawls.
